The Pallbearer

In Chief Justice Rehnquist's funeral, newly-renominated Judicial nominee John Roberts served as pallbearer, carrying the body of his aged mentor to his final resting place.

Bush likely has several reasons for re-naming Roberts from simple nominee to nominee-as-Chief: Roberts-as-chief will force the hearings, which begin Monday, into more sympathetic territory, as the more the Right can pull the case of a new chief's urgency, the less debate will be allowed and heard; it shows Roberts' willing adherence and loyalty to The Administration's ideological line; and it provides a huge buttress to the longevity of that conservative agenda. Roberts may outseat his potential predecessor, thwarting any other Administration who happens to want to change the make-up of the Supreme Court back from the conservative stripe. This will assure something similar to a Rehnquist Court spanning generations.

A political attempt? Who's next on the Presidential list of nominees...?
