It's My Life

Bush defends his non-interaction with Cindy Sheehan and the growing protest at his driveway [despite the fact that, in order to end the protesters all he has to do is talk to her, thus ending what has become a situation of increasing tension. All he has to do is talk to her, and the warning shots will end... Is our President intentionally refusing to do everything in his power to protect the well being of his friends, neighbors, and American Citizens?]:
"But whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there's somebody who has got something to say to the president, that's part of the job," Bush said on the ranch. "And I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say. But, I think it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life."
Oh how cute. The President seemingly forgot that he's the policy-head of the most powerful nation, has spurred a war and spurned other nations into threats of war, and that he can begin to resolve some of these issues by accepting responsibility for them. And apparently he doesn't realize that, perhaps, people hound him so diligently because he has not once ever been humble enough to actually listen to those detractors with whom he claims to sympathize. This isn't defending his position; this is adolescent whining.

But hey, he just wants his li'l vacation time back home on the range. I think we all should give him that, right? Especially Cindy Sheehan [or should I say: Left wing establishment ATTACK DOG Cindy Sheehan, who didn't even know her own son].

Just lay off, it's his life! Don't you forget!

We have not succeeded in answering all of our problems - indeed, we have not completely answered any of them. The answers we have found have only served to raise a whole new set of questions. In some ways we feel we are as confused as ever, but we think we are confused on a much higher level about more important things.

The only thing I really feel obligated or comfortable to take on from your comment here, nate, is that you seem to be willing to "let bush off the hook" as per his comment- "it's important for me to go on with my life." I feel compelled to say that this is whining and dismissive- that's all it is. His negligence in dealing with any kind of alternative position to his poltical position can be explained away as him trying to "live his life" is foolish. It's like having waaaay too much sympathy for Tom Cruise for being a celebrity and being photographed. I'm sure it's not a pleasant world to live in, the extreme celebrity of it, but that is your JOB. you are PAID to be photographed, and, arguably, not much else. And paid excrutiatingly.

likewise with being the spearhead of American policy and with choosing such aggressive and drastic actions as Bush has chosen. In fact, I believe he OWES us a listening ear. He declared a presidential mandate when his approval ratings were in the high 40%s. That's not a mandate. if you get elected with less than half-support, you fucking listen to your opposition.

that's what I disagree with- that he is so whiningly dismissive to the entirity of the opposition. To me, whatever Sheehan can ask him seems irrelevent as it does to you- what's more important here is that Bush simply dismisses her entirely.

As for Sheehan- she has become something of a nexus, a focal point for the opposition. I think that, in itself, is important enough. Is she the RIGHT focal point? are the reasons to key into her correct? has the left adopted something of an empty shell soley for emotional capabilities and moral superiority...? I think this is all very possible. I'm wrestling with this concept very much. I think that Sheehan is owed some explanation, but I think that primarily because we ALL are. not one of us knows wtf we're doing in Iraq. it doesn't make sense.

Until that question is answered, yes, Casey Sheehan did die in vain- none of us know why he died. That's pretty distressing, and I'd imagine it's distressing for a mother...

What do you think? is Sheehan the "right" point of focus for her? how/should the left move forward around her? is her grieving process, now that it has become public, domain enough to build some policy and political perception? Will it do the left any good to have that...??? Really- open sounding board for all, please chime in.
