e e

(im)c-a-t(mo) / b,i;l: e

Is that a poem?

Poet Billy Collins has a nice portrait/review of a biography of e e cummings. The gist: Why do we revere the poet e e cummings for altering the entire literary landscape with type-set shenanigans and wit, but almost nobody knows any of his poetry itself?

Interesting conundrum, considering the effects of e e: his poem about the sleepy cat for instance, above, shows direct lineage to text-happy IM-age teens, doesn't it? And the syntax annihilating experiaments trend toward the cut-and-paste-able, stream-of-conscious digital age.

Can a poet, or artist in any arena, have such an influence that while the modes of their work have been integrated (accidentally or otherwise) into culture, their work itself has been all but dismissed?

Any other artists with similar issues in any medium you can think of?
