US is Crazy
The US unfortunately leads the world in rates of mental illness and mental and emotional disorders:
The United States leads in mental illness globally with 46 percent of Americans suffering mental disorders ranging from anxiety, depression to substance abuse in their lifetime, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.Looked at from within, this is probably shocking to many of us. Looked at from abroad, I think it is probably explanatory.
Within the past year, about 25 percent of all Americans met the criteria for having a mental illness, and fully 25 percent of those had a "serious" disorder that significantly disrupted their ability to function day to day, according to a one-year-and-a-half survey of the country's mental health, conducted by the University of Michigan.

Tru all Dat, yo, Nizzate.
However, you neglect the fundamental truth of perception amongst the insane:
Self-Denial.
The shock comes from this lack of external perception: a crazy person thinks they're hayhoekahy and that everybody around them is simply gonebonkers. And it's not until the straightjacket has been laced that the crazyman realizes there's not much he can do about it- and he either comes to terms with his "problem" or simply falls further into a vacuous self-obsessed hole of insanity.
If the Rio Grande and Mississippi weren't major rivers in America, then De Nile should be.... uh... heh heh... uh...
sorry.
Anyway. it should also be noted that some crazy people were not crazy at all, and likely are not crazy. for instance: centuries of shackling of the "hysterical female" should be considered a crime.
And you point to another trend: the corporatization of mental illness- you're only so sick as we say you are and as much money as we can extract from you. The sheer volume of Ritilin should be an indicator to that. When not enough kids could be professed "ADDers!!!" then all of a sudden we're ALL at risk for "ADULT ADD!" Oh god! you can't pay attention! You're CRAZY!
This post is a strange one to me. Because i think it's indicative of a bigger craziness- this idea of thought control is prevelent. if you don't adhere to the public line, YOU'RE CRAZY! if you don't accept a policy issue or a political perspective, YOU'RE CRAZY! if you're Howard Dean, YOU'RE CRAZY! but if you're Rush Limbaugh, as you point out... you're only sort of crazy [but don't forget, he's a private citizen! keep his records sealed!]
There's this weird in-fighting going on. between corporate culture and actual culture; political perspectives; lifestyle choices; an elective war; religious freedom versus religious conformity... and, frankly, I think it's just driving us all insane.
